If you don’t want to drive over to Wind River Casino when the mood for poker strikes you, then head online and play at the site of your choice. Internet-based poker is, for all intents and purposes, legal in Wyoming. The cultural characteristics common to Wyomingites seem to play a role in this laissez-faire attitude toward online poker. The Wind River Hotel and Casino is hosting, once again, Wyoming’s most prestigious poker tournament, Wyoming State Championship Poker. An expected 340 players will vie for the Wyoming Poker.
Continuing the trend of poker players signing with brick-and-mortar (and in the case of WinStar tent) casinos … Maria Ho joins Greg Raymer as a celebrity endorser of WinStar Casino in Far Far North Dallas, Oklahoma. Just in time, btw, to begin pimpin their upcoming big River Tourney. Apparently the satellites are about ready to open … and this year they are guaranteeing a $3 million prize pool.
This tournament has grown and grown into one of the biggest of the year in the country … and not that it would be all Ho and Fossilman’s doing … but I have a feeling this year people outside of Texas and Oklahoma will start to take note.
Here’s a little behind-the-scenes vid of Maria’s commercial shoot with the Chickasaw … who by the way, just officially bought Lone Star Park in Grand Prairie, presumably changing the dynamic of Texas gambling legislation, but that’s a story for another time … right now it’s all about the value of Asian poker hotties playing the role of high-stakes cash game player. That and/or being a WSOP main event champion still seem to play well in the poker endorsement world.
There is currently no legislation permitting online poker in the state.
The least populous state in the country, Wyoming doesn’t tend to be a pioneer when it comes to gaming. In fact, they didn’t offer a lottery until 2013, becoming the 44th state to do so.
Even so, the state has taken a conservative approach banning scratch-off tickets and the sale of lottery tickets via independent machines.
That said, the state is home to several tribal casinos including Little Wind Casino, Shoshone Rose Casino, Wind River Casino, and 789 Smokeshop & Casino. Of those, only Wind River offers poker, which includes the annual Wyoming State Poker Championship tournament. There are also two horse tracks — Wyoming Downs and Streetwater Downs.
Wyoming has always been late to the party when it comes to gaming. The state resisted tribal gaming until the tribes won the right in court in 2005. Aside from a pari-mutuel commission, they lack any formal gaming commission, though talks of establishing one did emerge in 2016.
Such a commission would have considered new gaming options, but there hasn’t been any movement in recent years. The bad news is online poker won’t be coming to Wyoming anytime soon if ever. The silver lining is that it’s the smallest player pool in the country.
None at present. But you can always play poker for free with the WSOP Social App.
